We’re always looking for great content designers and strategists to support us with client work.
Our freelancers work on a variety of full and part-time projects across a range of industries, including:
- charities,
- the arts,
- healthcare,
- education,
- law,
- finance and banking,
- public sector.
Sometimes they support the CDL team, other times they join our client’s teams directly. You do not need government experience to apply.

What you’ll get
When you join our network, you’ll get:
- an induction to understand how we work,
- a contract in plain language to agree the terms of any project you take on,
- support from the CDL team throughout any project,
- 30-day payment terms so you’re paid within a month of sending us your invoice.
There may be times when you’ll need to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) to keep our client’s work confidential. We’ll discuss this with you before you agree to any work.
How to apply
We ask everyone to do this content design test when they apply to join our freelance network. This helps us assess your skills so we can place you on suitable projects.
The test should take no more than a couple of hours. You can use a format or tool that works best for you.
After reading the instructions, we’d like you to show us:
- the process you use to design content,
- how this process has informed your writing,
- how this has affected the tone and style of your piece of content.

- your content design test,
- a brief cover letter explaining why you want to work with us,
- an up-to-date CV.
